Ice Skating Tips for Beginners

Have you been reading all of our blogs about ice skating recently, but perhaps you are a little unsure as to where to begin?  Or maybe you have never ice skated before and are a little bit hesitant to try something new?  Well here is a list for a few things to consider if you are a newbie on the ice.

Tips for Beginners
Have you ever gone ice skating? If you have not yet tried to ice skate, you may be missing out on a great time! Here are a few pointers for those of you who haven’t yet braved the ice:
1) Don’t look down when ice skating, this can throw off your balance and make it more difficult to stay on your feet.
2) Be sure to find the right skates for you, if your skates feel too tight or even worse, too loose, find another pair. If you own an old pair and they do not feel right consider renting skates. The experience of ice skating when wearing the right skates is significantly different from those efforts in the wrong size skates.
3) Take it slow. When new to the feel of ice skates and icy surfaces, start slowly (while not looking down) and get used to the feeling. Skating on ice is very similar to skating on roller blades, or roller skates in terms of balance; remember practice makes perfect.
4) Watch the direction of all of the other skaters. Typically most ice skating rinks have a direction in which every other skater is heading, don’t go in the opposite direction! This will certainly get you off on the wrong foot in learning this new skill.
5) Have fun and relax.  Learning something new can always be a little overwhelming but don’t be afraid to try and try again.  Practice makes perfect, but you don’t have to be perfect when you are just out to have fun!
